February 2022 Monthly Meeting

Guildford Quilters
February 8 2022

Our second meeting of the year involved presentations by 2 members, and a lively “show and tell” session of members’ work

“Borders” by Doreen Plumridge

Doreen is a founder member of GQ (too modest to say, but somewhere around 1984) and has a wealth of experience. Her talk was about the importance of planning the border of a quilt, both in terms of pattern, size and shape. We discussed how to avoid “wavy” edges, by being meticulous about the size of each finished block, and to avoid over handling of fabric. For straight borders she demonstrated her method of doing a mitred corner, which is her favoured approach, and showed that a wider border can frame a quilt so much better than a narrow one, as well as adding size.

However, Doreen’s quilts rarely have straightforward borders! She showed us curved borders, embellished with flowers borders, and scalloped borders on her wonderful collection of quilts. Here are some photographs of some of her stunning quilt work.

Doreen quilts by hand using a hoop. She designs all her quilts before she starts, and always seems to have a clear vision of the finished article; indeed she sketches out her designs onto simple graph paper and we saw her working file of these designs (photo)
It was a pleasure to listen to Doreen; she is a relaxed and inspiring teacher, who I felt I could sit, listen and learn from all day.

“A post card challenge” by Rita Tallent

“CALLING ALL DELTIOLOGISTS”

We had a delightful demo from Rita on the post-card challenge as well as looking at her wonderful collection of 6 x 4 inch quilts. In case you were unable to come, the instructions can be found under the downloads tab on the main website page; see photo below of a few examples. Do have a go. Apart from the challenge for May, we hope to display the many fabulous postcards created by you at our exhibition in 2023.

Guildford Quilters has set itself a challenge……all of us will attempt to design and make a postcard quilt, in black/white and ONE other colour. This challenge will be judged by Janet Clare when she comes to Albury in May 2022. Watch this site to see what we get up to and to see the winning entry!
